DFN-Internet at a Glance
With the DFN-Internet service, we provide participating institutions with an internet protocol (IP) communications service. Using DFN-Internet, members can access the X-WiN research network, all other cooperating research networks around the globe, as well as all other subnetworks in the internet (IP-transit).
DFN-Internet is oriented to the specific, challenging needs of the scientific community. DFN-Internet is oriented towards the needs of the most challenging projects in science and has been consistently designed for high data transmission rates as well as low latencies and runtime fluctuations. Real-time applications, such as VoIP and video conferencing services are also well supported.

- Transfer of IPv4 and IPv6 data traffic. Support for Unicast and Multicast routing.
- Registration and maintenance of a .de domain and up to 10 “type-o” domains. Each additional domain comes with additional fees.
- Allocation of IPv4 and IPv6 address ranges to the necessary extent according to the specifications and guidelines of the RIPE NCC.

Our goal is to avoid overloading X-WiN at all times. Accordingly, packet losses do not normally occur. We regularly monitor X-WiN utilization, and network expansion takes place as necessary.
We ensure a high availability of X-WiN’s necessary infrastructure and functionality. This is achieved by building a network where the essential systems are geographically redundant.
Participants using the DFN-Internet service can further maximize availability of their service by doubling the connection to the subscriber’s institution. For DFN-Internet participating institutions, it is even possible to further maximize the network’s availability by forging a second connection to the service.
The typical annual availability for DFN-Internet service with a double connection to our service is 99,99 percent, including all planned and previously scheduled maintenance. This corresponds to a total service interruption time of about one hour per year.
The X-WiN infrastructure and the participant connections are continuously monitored, emerging disruptions and interruptions are proactively addressed and retrospectively evaluated. We provide availability data stemming from these key figures for members upon request.
-
In principle, participating institutions can choose whether to use a singular or double connection to DFN-Internet.
With a single access connection, we will connect the installation location to a node from the X-WiN core network. The data transfer rate of the access connection corresponds with the sum of the bandwidth from all DFN-Internet services on this connection.
For the double connection, we essentially connect a participant institution to two different geographically redundant X-WiN network nodes. The data transfer capacity of each access connection corresponds with half of the total sum of bandwidth from all DFN-Internet services on this connection.

Costs and Fees
You can find information for the costs and fees that correspond with the services DFNInteret, DFN-DoS Basic Protection, DFN-CERT, DFN-PKI, DFN-AAI, DFNconf, eduroam, DFN-MailSupport, and DFN-Listserv. These charges took effect on January 1, 2022 at the decision of the 80th General Assembly of Participating Institutions.
Participant Portal
Participating institutions can get a compact overview of technical parameters, such as their agreed-upon service categories, responsible contact people, managed IP-network spaces, and information for the connection itself such as transfer capacity, interfaces in use, and installation locations to the X-WiN connection. In addition, the portal offices participants complete access to core data such as information about the contract or the service agreement.
